According to CSNPhilly.Com and the Philadelphia Inquirer, Villanova’s Maalik Wayns is headed to Sixers training camp.
Wayns’ agent, Andy Miller, confirmed the reports on Monday morning.
Wayns had a rough June 28th, going undrafted in this year’s NBA Draft. Still, the 21 year-old showed poise and determination in the Orlando Summer League.
With a minor injury, Wayns’ decided to pack his bags and skip the Las Vegas Summer League, which he would have played for the Golden State Warriors.
Philadelphia is in-need of a backup PG for starter Jrue Holiday, so the only competition for Wayns would be veteran Royal Ivey and Xavier Silas.
Wayns’, who left Villanova after his junior season, averaged 17.4 points per game along with 4.6 assists per game in a disappointing season for the Wildcats.
Notable:
- Wayns’ averaged 11.7 points, 5.7 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game in the Orlando Summer League.
- Neumann-Goretti grad Scoop Jardine will attend Charlotte’s training camp. Jardine’s draft stock went drastically down after he suffered a broken foot three days before the NBA Draft. He averaged 8.9 points per game in his senior season.

And with Silas’s head injury, who knows how that will progress. Good opportunity for Wayns.
Yeah he got lucky. I definitely see him making the team as a 2nd/3rd string Point Guard. He’ll do something with this opportunity for sure.
It’s also cool that he came from Roman Catholic in the city. He was a beast to watch there.
Great situation for Wayns. Despite a tough junior season at Nova this guy has an NBA all the way. Can score off the dribble and is an underrated facilitator. I would say you could even play Jrue and Maalik together. This will give a chance for Wayns to play off the ball and show off that perimeter jumpshot that was at times inconsistent in college. Not having having to carry all of the load on this team contrary to his situation at Nova, look for Wayns to have a similar Lou Williams type of role. Great signing of one of the best ballers to come out Philadelphia for the Sixers.
It will definitely be interesting. Wondering if the Sixers didn’t sign him if another NBA team would. Also, doesn’t seem like Rosen will play in the NBA for ’12-’13. Hope he gets an invite to a training camp.
